City Garden

My Dad has been asking to see pictures of our backyard in its current state for weeks. Being that yesterday was Father's Day, I thought I'd indulge him even though our yard is a LONG way off from being done.
View from our bedroom
Eventually we'd like a patio, but for now having the table directly on the crabgrass is working out just fine.
If you are one of our very generous family members who gave us a gift card from Pottery Barn over the past year, we used it to buy new seat cushions and an umbrella. Thank you!
The gray building back there is the garage of the house directly behind us. Our plan someday is to remove the cyclone fence and replace it with a wooden fence.
For now, I planted some Holly bushes. I'm hoping they will grow really fast and help camouflage the building and cyclone fence.
The new Holly bushes are in the background. We transplanted the Hostas from the side yard. Mulching this area is still on the "to do" list.
Chris built the Adirondack chairs from scratch about 5 years ago for the old house. Over the weekend he put on a fresh coat of paint and now they look good as new.
View of the side of the house and a glimpse of the Arborvitae we had planted last fall. When they grow to be full size, our backyard will be nice and private.
View of the side yard and "fern forest". We're not exactly sure yet how to best utilize this area.

We also bought some inexpensive solar lighting. These are horrible pictures, but you get the idea...

Check out how much the flower beds in the front of the house have grown since we had them planted last fall.

What do you have going on in your yard this summer?

That first shot is awesome - look how your red chairs, umbrella, and cushions pop! And I'm floored that your husband built those Adirondack chairs - you've got one handy hubby. Little by little we are trying to get our yard ready for our daughter's 1st birthday part at the end of August.

How'd you get your husband to build you those chairs? I've been trying but getting nowhere. :P

I love the curb appeal you house has! Your dog looks like he wants to give a tour...like come in and let me show you around. :)

Love the red? And your flowers are looking great.

Our backyard project is going to have to wait until next year, but our plantings are doing well this year, so I'm pleased with that.

Wow - wish my yard looked a fraction this pulled together.

I admire anyone who can focus on the interior and exterior at the same time. I hate outdoor work because my mind is reeling with ideas about what should be going on inside. I am absolutely in love with your house. The shot of the front of the house makes my heart leap.

Like the other readers, I love the red! I find working in my yard fulfilling when I have time to do it, but that is the problem, finding the time. We have tons of things that need attention in our yard and not much time for getting after it. So, often I try to ignore and enjoy what we do have, sounds like that's what you guys do too!

awww...love the last shot of your dog! :) I love love love flowers, but I get overwhelmed with yard work because I have NO clue what I am doing. So my yard work plans for the summer involve asking Rick what he thinks would be best and then smiling and letting him do it. :)

The more I see, the more I am in love with your house!!! I just love a nice green backyard...I'm choosing to ignore your neighbor's ugly garage...and I'm completely impressed by your hubby's mad chair building skills! Absolutely fantastic!

Your backyard looks great to me! I wish mine looks 1/2 as nice. I like the pops of red you chose for the umbrella and Adirondacks (I can't believe your husband made these!)

Chris made those fabulous, gorgeous, amazing chairs? I think I may have told you this before Carrie, but your husband is a genius! Your back garden looks so inviting!

Carrie, I love the red and how the Adirondack chairs draw your eye to the back of the yard. It looks so inviting!

Also the white flowers seem to glow with the solar lights on. So pretty!

the color you chose for the Adirondack chairs is perfect- it really brightens up the space. You sure do have a handy husband! You basically have a room back there- it has sooo much potential! Looking forward to watching it evolve.
