Chris's parents were in town for the weekend visiting from Washington. We took them to Portsmouth, RI to the Newport Polo grounds to watch a match. I can't think of a better way to spend a sunny summer afternoon than to sit in lawn chairs, drink cocktails, and watch men on horses.
There's a match every Saturday during the summer. It is best to get there early and claim a good spot on the lawn in the general admission section and have yourself a nice little picnic. Or if you are really organized, you can pay an additional $30 to reserve a parking spot next to the field, then invite all your friends to tailgate for the afternoon.
This weekend's match was USA (blue shirts) vs. England.
I took this picture of Chris with his parents between chukkers when they invite everyone out onto the field to stomp divots. By the time we got there, the only divots left were the steaming kind.
More people divot stomping.
At the end of the match, the spectators stand along the field to high five the players. This was the shot I got just before getting pushed out of the way by a toddler. Apparently, the kid takes his polo matches very seriously!
So that was our last hurrah of the summer. Soon the weather will start changing and Chris and I will be inside stripping wallpaper and painting trim in our family room.
(Which truthfully doesn't sound all that bad to me.)
How did you all spend your Labor Day weekend?

I didn't know people actually went to polo matches. Very interesting. We sat on our butts and did nothing..and helped Nate's sister paint her kitchen cabinets. And now I am on my couch until the last possible second before I have to go to work. :P
We watched 8 soccer games at our kids tournament, in 100 degree heat. Your weekend looks classy and lovely!
Oh, this looks so great. I've only been to horse races...now I want to go see a polo match. Very preppy indeed!
This looks like a blast! There is an event similar to us down here and now I might need to push to attend next year. As dreadful as stripping wallpaper sounds, the end result is so wonderful that it's all worth it. I actually kind of liked taking down wallpaper after a while.
What a fun day! What's your trick on the wall paper? I have some that I keep putting off...
Did you drink Pimm's Chukkers?(I think that's what they are called.) It's been years since I went to a polo match, but what fun! And the Pimm's drinks were delicious! Ahh yes...moving onto to those indoor projects! Our home office is on the Fall list...

Wow - this totally blew my weekend out of the water!!! What a fun idea! M.
This looks like fun! I've never been to a polo match, but it sounds like a great way to end the summer. I have been trying to spend the days outside working in the yard now that the weather has cooled down. I know soon it will be time to get back to work inside again:).
Looks like a fun day, polo is so beautiful and thrilling and glamorous even if you don't know much about the game itself..hve been to a few matches and really enjoyed the whole experience.
All I can think of is Pretty Woman! Hopefully Stucky wasn't there. :)
yes indeed, what a great way to spend the afternoon! who won?
I've always wanted to go to a Polo match! It looks so civilised and cultured!
That's so interesting- I've never been. Sounds like fun! Yes, get going on that family room- I can't wait to see it :)
I want to go divot stomping! Reminds me of Pretty Woman!
